The lyrics of the first half of the song, sung by John Cale, describe Lady Godiva ; the lyrics of the second half, sung by Cale alternating with Lou Reed, are full of oblique, deadpan black humor and describe a botched surgical procedure, implied to be either a lobotomy or a sex : Scepter Studios, New York City.

The Velvet Underground Lyrics. "Lady Godiva's Operation". Lady Godiva here dressed so demurely. Pats the head of another curly haired boy, just another toy. Sick with silence she weps sincerely. saying word that have oh so clearly been said. so long ago. Draperies wrapped gently 'round her shoulder. Life has made her that much bolder now.

Strangely, "Lady Godiva's Operation" is probably my favorite track on the whole record. If your fan of the Velvets' other stuff, then this album is a must-have. If you're just starting to discover them, then I would suggest starting with their first album (the "banana album") or their S/T album/5().
